An defence minister has stated that the MoD is currently looking into the possible threats posed by Chinese cars, and personnel have been told to avoid discussing classified matters in all cars.

Security Advice for Defence Personnel

In a recently aired appearance on a radio station, Luke Pollard commented on reports that MoD staff have been instructed not to talk about secret material while riding in Chinese cars.

The minister explained that the ministry is “investigating” cars from China within its fleets, however emphasised that security is a concern in all modern vehicles.

We have a collection of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones account for a tiny fraction.
But whether you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a car from another country, our instruction to our people is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence technology into their vehicle, to avoid having discussions at a classified level in any kind of vehicle, because of the increasing threats of surveillance that are present in all vehicle, to restrict those confidential conversations in secure locations. This is a prudent and reasonable thing for anyone concerned about security.

After it was put to him that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using every cars from China, the minister replied: That is exactly what we’re investigating at the moment.”

Broader Security Background

This revelation follows reports from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made buses, which could allow the Chinese government to switch off buses and bring disruption to transport systems.

Furthermore, a Russian spy ship was reportedly shining laser beams at RAF aircrew, described as a “extremely risky” act by defence officials.

This broader security environment underscores the significance of strong protocols and caution in every aspects of government activities, from vehicle usage to communication habits.
